SMILE

About SMILE

SMILE is a minimally invasive, flapless laser procedure that reshapes the cornea. The procedure uses a highly precise femtosecond laser to create a small lens-shaped piece of tissue (called a lenticule) inside the cornea, which is then removed through a micro-incision just a few millimeters wide. This reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors such as myopia and astigmatism, allowing light to focus properly on the retina.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is SMILE different from LASIK or PRK?

SMILE corrects vision through a tiny incision without creating a corneal flap or removing the surface epithelium. This means faster healing, less dryness, and greater corneal stability compared to other laser procedures.

2. Is SMILE suitable for all vision problems?

Currently, SMILE is approved for the correction of myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. For hyperopia (farsightedness), other procedures like LASIK or PRK may be more suitable.

3. Does SMILE hurt?

No. The procedure is performed under topical anesthetic drops, and patients typically feel only mild pressure for a few seconds during laser application.

4. How long does recovery take after SMILE?

Most patients experience clear functional vision within one or two days, with full visual recovery over the following weeks. Normal activities can often resume the next day.

5. Are the results of SMILE permanent?

Yes. The results are stable and long-lasting. As with any vision correction, future age-related changes (such as presbyopia) may still occur later in life.
